Poem written 06.25.2024

Twisting in the breeze

Knocked from a limb

By a strong kind of wind

Falling

Falling

SMACK!

It tumbles up the windshield

Across the roof

And falls to the pavement

Leaves lost

Crushed and tussled

By the rubber that burns by

The twig was from Miss Magnolia

Who lived on Diamond drive

Her leaves were wide, thick with

Children's fingernails pressed

Along the edge and on the stem

White flowers that smell like

Freshly picked sweet lemon sorbet

Or a wet honeysuckle when it rains

A twig that filled the air

With breath

A tree's roots have grown

With depth

Limb is gone

Tree's still strong

A limb lives on

Even if in essence alone
